High school students experience severe injuries
A study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine examined the severity of injuries experienced by high school students in sports. Among male students the most severe injuries were incurred while playing football or wrestling.
Female students experienced more severe injuries playing basketball. The study was based on data from 100 nationally representative U.S. high schools. Severe injury was defined as any injury that sidelines a student for more than 21 days of sports participation.
The knee was the most affected joint in severe injuries, followed by the ankle and the shoulder.
