Knee Replacements and Minorities
Minority patients experience a higher complication rate after total knee replacement, according to a study published recently. The study took place between 1996 and 2000.
Stated in a positive way, more than 90% of patients experience no complications within 30 days of surgery.
However, minority patients experience higher rates of infection and non-infection related complications after knee replacement.
It is not clear what causes the difference in these complications between whites and minority patients.
Interestingly, after hip replacement neither complications nor mortality in the first 30 days following surgery were different.
