Genetics May Affect Hip Replacement Outcome
A recently published study in an arthritis journal found a correlation between genetic variation in certain genes associated with a production of certain enzymes and loosening of the prosthetic parts in total hip replacement patients.
A review of more than 300 total hip patients was done. A study of those who had developed loosening of the prosthesis found that patients with a variation in one enzyme were three times more likely to have loosening than those without the genetic variation.
This would be another example of how understanding genetic variations helps us to realize why certain things happen to some patients and not to others who have apparently undergone similar treatment.
