Studies Support Surgery For Low Back Pain

Two recently concluded studies of hundreds of patients with severe sciatica were treated conservatively in one group and by early operative treatment in the other large group.

Those patients with significant proven disc protrusion had a much faster relief of leg pain and faster perceived recovery than those who did not have surgery.

Obviously any surgery should be a mutual decision between the patient and the operating surgeon.

This is not intended as a blanket endorsement of early surgery for sciatica, but it does show that recovery can in many cases be gained much more quickly with earlier operative intervention.
