What's New and Noteworthy

Outpatient Surgery

In a 10 year study visits to free standing surgical centers tripled to 15,000,000 surgeries and other procedures per year. Surgeries at free standing centers now make up 42% of all outpatient operations.

This increase is undoubtedly linked to improvement in pain medication and anesthesia techniques, less invasive procedures and pressure by insurance companies to favor outpatient procedures.

The growth of outpatient surgery whether it is done in a hospital outpatient surgery setting or a free standing surgery center has been truly phenomenal.

One half to two thirds of the surgery that I now do is done as an outpatient.

Furthermore patients invariably come into the hospital on the day of surgery and are never admitted the night before.

Even patients having open heart surgery are admitted on the same day as surgery!
