Are all rotator cuff tears “all in the family”?

People with relatives who have experienced rotator cuff injuries are at increased risk of similar injuries themselves.

A study at the University of Utah of patients with rotator cuff tears found that the risk extended out to and beyond 3rd cousin relationships.

Although it is unclear why this occurs the study’s authors maintain that their findings are a spring board for attempting to identify the injury’s genetic component. This may lead to future options for the prevention and treatment of rotator cuff injuries.
